‘Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’ Please please do not walk your dogs while the temperatures are high. Dogs can die very quickly of heat stroke which is indicated by a change in breathing or panting…..the dog is unable to pant fast enough to cool itself down when battling against external heat. The brain looses oxygen and so suffers a stroke. This is especially important to those breeds whose breathing is already severely compromised with compressed noses and shortened mouths such as Pugs, Cavaliers, British Bull dogs Pekineses etc. If you must take them out bring them swimming…..be warned.

On foot of our recent disappointment we put a lot of work into our sendaway and redirect and it paid off. Miss Sassy won the Tracking Dog stake at Fingal trial in Ashbourne last week. She worked very hard on the track and in the search square and succeeded. We returned on Sunday for the control test. She listened and followed every instruction. Finishing with a lovely round of jumps. She won the stake and qualified TDex on 200 marks out of a possible 220 and was awarded her first green star. A big thank you to Anne Collen the trials manager and to the farmers who allow us to use their land for our wonderful sport of working trials.

This morning I received a phone call from a new dog owner who after long concideration decided to return her new pup to the breeder. To me this was a very brave and honest lady who made the right decision for her and her children. Within a couple of days the reality of a pup in the house had disrupted the family, the children, their finances and their home. She had obviously purchased the dog from a good breeder who was prepared to take the pup back. Not all breeders are so concerned about the welfare of their puppies or their owners! DOGS ARE DEMANDING.

A week end dog handling & communication workshop is planned for Saturday May 31 & Sunday June 1st.

It will be held here at the Canine College Thomastown.

This is a skills based course. Certificates of completion will be presented at the end.

The course will run from 10.00 to 17.00 both days.

Tea & Coffee will be provided.

Please bring a packed lunch and waterproof footwear.

Pen & Paper

You can bring your own dog or use one of ours.

Cost is 190 euro for the two days.

Deposit of 50 euro is required to secure a place.
