Yesterday Sunday the 3rd March after our dog training & behaviour class was over I took my little Border Terrier out to an agility fun day in Athy. Although a bit cold it certainly was a fun day. Bodie did everything he was asked despite my confusion! Bodie is a terrier who does everything for food…but he has learned that in order to get the food he must play….now he just loves to Play and the food is incidental.

In August 2005 while on a three week residential dog training course, I met a very special dog. The course was based at Battersea Dogs Home Windsor. As part of their re homing policy all collies and working dogs are assessed for their working potential. I was looking for my first working trials dog. Working trials is a sport based on police dog tests where dogs are trained to track search, obey a wide variety of commands and jump a three foot clear, a nine foot long jump and scale a six foot high fence.
Like a scene out of a movie the Battersea van drew up and twenty collie type dogs were released from their confinement to run loose in a well secured field. The field belonged to a lady shepherdess who was going to assess their ability as potential sheepdogs. As most of the dogs seized the opportunity to run and frolic in this beautiful open space I noticed a dog that did not run with the pack and walked off by himself. He maintained a safe distance from the other dogs and from us. I thought I like him. He has the ability to think for himself and does not follow the pack. A dog after my own heart. He was only a pup but already had lovely long legs and possessed a sleek greyhound type physique so I knew he had the ability to jump. I pointed him out to John. John threw him his wallet which this shy black and white dog picked up and walked away with. He then dropped it and walked away. I then threw him my furry purse which he again picked up and walked away with. John said well he has passed the first assessment as a potential working dog. He has shown an interest in two novel items in a strange environment with strange people and has shown the ability to pick up strange items. John turned to me and said ‘The rest is up to you Samantha’. Like a sheep I was quickly corralled by the Battersea staff as they identified and questioned a possible owner who was not going to get away. As I filled in the papers I wrote down his new name. It is a well known fact that collies love to chase. In a domestic situation we provide them with balls instead of sheep. So I called my dog after a great sporting champion who also liked chasing balls….Pele.
Later when the shepherdess came to assess him and brought him into the pen with six sheep my collie started to take evasive action by digging holes and would not even acknowledge their existence never mind herd them! As I was still on my course I could not keep him at Windsor so a friend of John’s took him home and put him through his paces and the Bronze Good Citizen test which he passed easily after only a week of training.
He was flown to Ireland and so our partnership began with months of sitting on the grass teaching him to interact and play with me. After that his training was a very enjoyable journey of discovery. Later that year as I was desperately trying to think of a registered kennel name our own football hero George Best died. While walking I pondered how I could pay tribute to Battersea and to George?
Pele has now earned all his working trials qualifications of CDex – TDex Finally on Sunday the 3rd of February this year he won his second green star at the Working Trials Club of Ireland trial in Wexford and became an Irish Working Trials Champion.
I would like to say a sincere thank you to and all the staff at Battersea and to the work you put into these dogs but especially to judges Anne Bedford and Graham Reaney and of course to his previous owners for giving me the pleasure to own, train and live with a very special dog – Irish Working Trials Champion, Battersea’s Best to Pele.

Well here we are in 2015. Here are some useful tips to help to improve the relationship between you and your dog.

To spend at least 30 mins with my dog every day. Even if that means fifteen minutes in the morning and fifteen in the evening. This should include at least one walk if you are both up to it.

The dog is a social animal so he needs company just as you and I need company. It is unnatural for a dog to be alone all day.

Do not get another dog to solve this problem. If you don’t have time for one dog you definitely don’t have time for two.

Try to play with your dog , whether that be hide and seek or retrieve or just free running recalls. Play build up your bond. We all need to play.

If your dog sleeps outside or is an outdoor dog please bring him or her in for at least half an hour in the evening. If the dog has been relegated to the back garden because of bad behaviour. You have to bring the dog in, to allow it to learn how to behave. If you need help with this call me !

Groom your dog at least once a week, even the short haired breeds. Grooming is also a social bonding activity.

Please keep your temper. Do not share it with the dog or anyone else for that matter. If you need to let off steam, go into another room and scream.

Do NOT blame the dog for your mistakes… Dogs do what dogs do!!

Keep positive. All animals, including ourselves respond much better to kind, considerate and gentle handling. Only bullies use intimidation and physical abuse to subjugate. Do not confuse fear with respect.

Think Dog… Think patience, kindness and understanding

Samantha knows that dog training and behaviour modification is about listening to and respecting the owner, as well as the dog. Every owner is as unique as their dog.

For success in your dog training:

You must have the dogs attention. Therefore it must know its name and be able to respond.

The dog must see the owner as leader of the pack.

In order for the dog to want to please the owner it must be motivated.

The reward must be valuable to the dog. In order for the reward to be valuable it must not be freely available. All rewards must be under the owners control.

If the dog is in “on duty” it must know when it is “off duty”

Therefore we use a release command i.e. “ok” or “finished”.

Grooming and daily handling is essential for a successful training routine.

Always follow the path of least resistance i.e. if grooming is a struggle, tire the dog out first.

If a dog is consistently disobeying a command, then change the command and start again.

Plan your lessons, keep dog training sessions short. Know what you want to achieve. Have fun and don’t forget to quit while you’re ahead.
